Imperceptible in the beginning, the use of material gets more and more visible in Marie-Lydie Joffre works until becoming almost mineral. Using stone as a medium came naturally to the artist who is moreover very sensitive to sculpture and archeology. In her childhood, she often searched out beautiful stones to which she confided. It appears now as if the PastelLithe adventure is the realization of a childhood dream.
During a walk in 1996, Marie-Lydie Joffre picks up a large stone which appealed to her. She already senses that the stone is, in itself, an ongoing artwork and she keeps it in her studio. Some weeks later, attracted to the stone, she starts spontaneously to draw a Nude on the smooth face of the rock with pastels: a "PastelLithe" is born.
Marie-Lydie Joffre instinctively feels that she has touched here one of her deepest aspirations. That is, to use the most natural medium and to add to it a touch of her art that far from dictating to the medium, enters instead in a symbiotic relationship with it and contributes to better reveal its internal beauty.
